“How can I help?”

Just about everything seems more complicated today. How successful have you been in programming your television’s remote control? Be honest. How often have you started and given up? You’re right––it’s depressing just thinking about it.

If that isn’t bad enough, there are now devices to control everything—TV, VCR, DVD and a music center. Are you ready to start trying to figure out one of these gadgets? What are the chances of getting it to work? This is at the top of my list of things not to think about.

Then, of course, there are computers. It’s no fun being around anyone who thinks computers are easy. Only kids should be allowed to use them. That’s a new law I could support.

Not everything’s overly complicated, however. Some things are down right simple.

Take a driver who stops to help someone with a flat tire on a snow-swept highway.

Then there’s the woman who leaves work at the end of the day every Thursday to tutor a kid who needs extra help with her school work.
All this seems rather simple, doesn’t it? It is.

These people asked themselves the same, simple question, “How can I help?” Nothing complicated. And nothing that will make headlines in tomorrow’s newspaper or get their picture on the seven o’clock news.
What if more businesses asked the same question? Would we have better products? We might even have better customer service.
What difference would it make if each of us asked ourselves, “How can I help?”
