Mediocrity, Apathy and Conformity
It doesn’t take a cynic to believe that most organizations have
an over-supply of all of these qualities.
Those who have tried their hand at motivating a kid, an employee or
even themselves know that the attempts little more than a waste of
time.
Then, why do companies spend so much money each year on “motivational”
activities and programs?
If you’ve ever wondered about that, there’s a website
you may want to visit, despair.com. It’s the brainchild of E.L.
Kersten, Ph.D. of Austin, Texas, the publisher of what he blatantly
calls “demotivational” materials.
There’s more than a sense of humor with what Dr. Kersten is
up to at Despair, Inc. In fact, he seems quite serious.
One of his most popular items (you can see it on the website) may
just capture the hearts and imaginations of many a frustrated business
owner and manager.
It’s known (affectionately, we assume) as the “get to
work” poster. It depicts a crew team rowing in the fog with
the caption, “You aren’t being paid to believe in the
power of your dreams.”
A friend has expressed the same thought a little differently. “By
age 11, I had figured out the most important truths of life,”
he says. “It’s simply this: the grass doesn’t cut
itself.”
Maybe we need to forget about getting motivated and just get out there
and cut the grass.
