The Joneses are misbehaving
We all know the Joneses. They’re the folks so many try to keep
up with.
The Joneses were taking vacation cruises before they became the rage.
Today, they’re out buying stainless steel kitchen appliances.
Oh, yes, they were the ones standing in line to buy the first plasma
screen TVs.
But where are the Joneses now? They still spend time in the expensive
stores and head for exclusive spas (no longer called resorts) all
over the world.
On the weekends, the Joneses may be dining at five-star restaurants
and sipping the latest exotic bottled water.
You can find the Joneses in rather unlikely—and unexpected—places.
They may very well be haunting the aisles of the nearest Wal-Mart.
Or, they may be clipping coupons from the Sunday newspaper supplement.
They may even love buying things on sale and then talking about how
much they saved.
You may even hear them say, “I think I’ll pass on that.
It’s just too pricey.”
And when they buy a new car, they’re taking a close look at
the miles per gallon.
Like the rest of us, the Joneses are on a mission. They’re in
hot pursuit of value. And, like the rest of us, they want to make
sure they’re getting their money’s worth.
There’s a good lesson for businesses in what’s happening
with the Joneses. Are we sure we’re giving customers what they
value or do we only think we are? The difference can be about as big
as it gets.
