Let’s tell the truth
Telling the truth is easy—when you haven’t done anything
wrong. The cover up comes when we’ve been less than candid and
honest.
That’s why I’m proud of my trade association, the Independent
Insurance Agents and Brokers of America or “The BIG I,”
as we call it.
When NY Attorney General Eliot Spitzer alleged recently that a national
insurance broker deceived clients by rigging bids and steering business
to insurance carriers for “extra” payments, the “BIG
I” stepped up to the plate immediately, condemning such practices
as illegal.
They didn’t stop there. “These unlawful practices betray
the public’s trust and unfairly damage our industry’s
reputation,” the “BIG I” said in a public statement.
Independent insurance agents know the value of trust. We serve people
we know and who live down the block. We go to church with them, see
them at school events and do business with them.
They look to us to protect everything they own. They ask our advice
and expect to get honest, straightforward answers.
The insurance business has been good to us and to our 20 employees
who work hard at maintaining our integrity.
We deplore the actions of those who take it upon themselves to abuse
client relationships by getting greedy.
Our customers must be confident that when they do business with us
they’re getting exactly what they need to protect their property,
families and their future.
And when they have a loss, they must know they’re being treated
right.
We’ll never make excuses for or defend anyone in our industry
who dares to damage that relationship.
