“Why didn’t someone explain that to me?

People are more interested in their insurance today. After answering a question, someone almost always asks, “Why didn’t someone explain that to me?”

It’s easy to be confused about insurance. Most of us don’t give it a thought until we have a claim. That’s when we remember making the decision not to buy certain coverage to help keep the cost down. As it turns out, the loss isn’t covered.

Explaining what insurance covers at the time of a loss may not be good timing Yet, you sure have a person’s full attention.

In a nutshell, insurance is designed to protect against losses that could cause us financial pain. A major fire or a lawsuit for negligence, for example.

Insurance isn’t meant to pay for every loss. Just those we feel we can’t afford to pay for ourselves.

Some people like to think that as long as they’re insured, they can be lax about the care of their property or their personal behavior.

Wrong. Insurance companies pay close attention to “claims histories.” A list of claims raises a red flag and they start asking questions: “Why all the claims? Do we want to continue insuring this customer? Should we raise their rates to cover the losses?”

We should applaud insurance companies for wanting to insure responsible customers, those with good claims records. That’s what helps keep our insurance premiums down.

Isn’t it interesting that so much in life—including insurance—comes down to personal responsibility.
